The Anti-Gay Bigots’ Poor Understanding of Basic Civics
Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you, Jeremy at Good as You, who juxtaposes two statements of “lawyers” from the Alliance Defense Fund (an anti-gay bigot outfit of people who couldn’t get real law jobs) to show that the bigots in this nation who wax patriotic about the Constitution, freedom, and “Amurka!” are actually the ones who understand it the least:
06/03/08 — The Alliance Defense Fund’s Brian Raum speaking about NY Gov. Paterson’s directive that his state must recognize out-of-state same-sex unions:
“The future of marriage should be decided by the legislature, not executives who take matters into their own hands,” … “New Yorkers have a fundamental right to set marriage policy through the legislative process, but [Gov. Paterson] has ordered a radical redefinition of marriage without the consent of the governed. Ignoring the democratic process does not help the government in its duty to promote and encourage strong families.”
09/07/05 — The Alliance Defense Fund’s Glen Lavy speaking about the California legislature’s passage of marriage legislation:
“Today’s action by the 58 percent of California senators who voted in favor of this bill shows they have a reckless disregard for the will of their constituents,” … “AB 849 flies in the face of the expressed will of the people of California as expressed at the ballot box.”
If it’s the courts, they’re violating the will of the people, if it’s the leg, they’re violating the will of the courts and the people, and in November, as it was in Arizona a couple of years back, when we help to beat the bigots back at the California ballot box, whose will shall we be violating then? The Framers? The Fundamentalist Christians? It HAS been funny lately, as the bigots have been saying the California court violated the will of the people AND the legislature, considering the fact that the legislature voted for marriage equality not once but TWICE, and the most reliable polls show that Californians favor marriage equality NOW, regardless of what they did almost ten years ago. The public is getting smarter on this issue much faster than the bigots apparently realize.
Oh well.
Be sure to read Jeremy’s entire post on this, as he constructs, approximately, the reasoning of the “legal” “minds” of the “Christian” Right.
