CODE RED, America: Bush Administration laying groundwork for war with Iran
Right now. As we speak. Behind our backs. Without the approval of Congress.
And they’re using Iraq to do it. I’ve been writing (here and here) about the Bush administration pushing a secret plan to extend the US occupation of Iraq indefinitely, even though the great majority of Iraqis (about the same percentage as that of Americans who disapprove of Bush) are vehemently against the plan. What’s Bush asking for?
– 58 permanent bases (almost twice what the US has now, although originally the US wanted 200.)
– “…authority to detain and hold Iraqis without turning them over to the Iraqi judicial system…”
– “…immunity from Iraqi prosecution for both U.S. troops and private contractors…”
– “…the prerogative for U.S. forces to conduct operations without approval from the Iraqi government.”
– “…continued control over Iraqi airspace and the right to refuel planes in the air…”
– “…power to determine if a hostile act from another country is aggression against Iraq.”
Additionally, the US has been essentially extorting the Iraqi government into accepting this plan by holding approximately $50 billion of Iraq’s foreign reserves hostage…AND, oh, surprise, Bush doesn’t want to have to get congressional approval.
Put them all together, and what do you get? ThinkProgress figured it out last night:
The reason the White House is so hell-bent on signing a long-term agreement may have less to do with Iraq and more to do with Iran. According to press reports of the ongoing negotiations, the Bush administration is seeking the “power to determine if a hostile act from another country is aggression against Iraq.”
(…)
The administration’s request would seemingly allow the U.S. to brand Iran as an enemy of Iraq and attack Iran in the name of defending Iraq [You know how they're always overselling Iranian influence in Iraq? Yeah. -Ed.] pursuant to a legal obligation under the status of forces agreement.
Other details from press accounts confirm that the Bush administration has one eye on Iran in the course of its negotiations with Iraqis. The Washington Post explains that the administration is seeking “the prerogative for U.S. forces to conduct operations without approval from the Iraqi government.” Moreover, the U.S. wants control over Iraq’s airpsace:
The American negotiators also called for continued control over Iraqi airspace and the right to refuel planes in the air, according to [Sami al-Askari, a leading Shiite politician], positions he said added to concerns that the United States was preparing to use Iraq as a base to attack Iran.
Since the administration is unlikely to get an Iran war authorized through Congress, it’s instead trying to sneak it through the Iraqi parliament.
And there you have it. This is how Bush & Cheney want to sneak their new war in without anyone’s approval. They want to pressure the Iraqi government to roll over and let Bush use it as the 52nd state (the 51st is Israel, um, duh) in a war against Iran. The American people don’t support this. The Iraqi people don’t support this. The Iranian people certainly don’t support this, and it would be disastrous for any future chances for the Iranian people to reform from the inside out. They’re remarkably like us, the Iranians. They really don’t like their current regime. But if a foreign power comes in and attacks, they have enough national pride that they’ll immediately rally around said regime, and the geopolitical consequences for all nations involved, including ours, will be disastrous.
The Bush administration is hellbent on having this “agreement” pushed through by the end of next month because the current UN security agreement expires at the end of the year, after which Bush won’t be president, and neither will John McCain. This way, George gets to leave a final “fuck you” to the world before he goes back to Crawford to think about what he’s done.
This should be the biggest story in the media right now, but, alas, it’s not, because the media is lazy and stupid. Spread the word to everyone you know.
I’ll continue to cover this, and as always, if you read one website per day, make it ThinkProgress.

This is true. Just trust me Evan, it’s true. My sarcastic and sad motto has become “Iran by Christmas!”.
The only way to stop Iran is with it’s people, the American Revolution way, but preferably without all the bloodshed and cannon balls. I don’t necessarily think this is possible with them, but here’s hoping. The President would completely screw up any chance of actually helping Iran, their people, and in turn us and the rest of the world, if we attack them from our Iraq-Annex.

Yep, and unfortunately most Americans have no damned clue what’s going on.
Adam said pretty much the same thing you did:
“You know, the sad & scary thing about all of this is that I don’t really think the public gets it. I mean, they may hear it, but they don’t truly GET IT. I am saying unequivocally that we will be at war with Iran within a year. I fully believe this. We’re about to lose a lot more people.”
And things ARE slowly changing in Iran, but most Americans don’t even understand that it’s not even Ahmadinejad who really wields the power over there. That’s why it was so key when Obama said at AIPAC that he would, under the right circumstances, be willing to meet with the “appropriate Iranian leader,” and why McCain is so delusional when he goes after Obama for “wanting to meed with Ahmadinejad without conditions.”

McCain doesn’t know anything. In the words of a commenter from crn.info…”For someone who [was in] the military…” he sure doesn’t know squat about what needs to happen.

That’s why I think it’s absurd that the media is letting him get away with using that line constantly.

Hi Evan,
You have a very nice site. I admire your passion on the issue and I understand your concerns. I think it is wonderful that you devote so much energy and time into something that “matters” in this crazy world. As you know I can not vote for Obama. I am a clinton4mccain woman. I am learning about John and to be honest I may not agree on everything he has to say I trust him.
I agree there is room for improvement in the VA system. I just don’t think Obama is the guy to handle our great nation. Thank you for blogging on my site. I will study the information you shared and I thank you for taking the time to share what you truly believe in.
Regards,

Me and the rest of military = vote for Obama. We want to come home. America needs troops at home, not in wars against terrorists we created. Go to Afganistan, Work with Pakistan, and get out of Iraq. Plus, McCain doesn’t KNOW the military, as he’s made painfully obvious in the last few years, despite the fact that he was IN the military eons ago. We can’t trust that, sorry. Obama knows what’s up. Plus, he doesn’t have dementia.
How about this friends, lets support the troops (me and my friends) and get me home from Iraq before my son turns 2, or hopefully home at all, that’d be nice. If we were fighting Hitler, or a just war, that’d be one thing, but we’re instead stuck in the middle of a religious civil war, mooching oil, and pissing off the Iraqis and the world; ie making more enemies for ourselves, getting more troops killed (ie me and my friends), and for what? To deplete America’s war-fighting and defensive abilities? To strip our homeland defense bare? To make us have to, seriously, duct tape our aircrafts together because we have no money to repair them safetly, because it’s all being spent on this war?
Let’s face facts, McCain is completely out of touch with what needs to happen. Our military strength is pathetic compared to what we’re required to be at, and it’s because we’re so tied up in a useless war that we can’t pull our heads out of our butts to save some lives and protect America. McCain, per his record, seems more concerned with making the rich richer, than making the right move for our troops and vets. Sorry, that’s how we see it, and that’s how he’s presented himself.
Obama is the only logical choice to help the troops, and America, and the world as a whole. His plan actually makes SENSE to our commanders and troops. There’s my 2 cents. Take it for what you will, but it’s not every day you get to hear the opinion of less than 1% of the US population that gets put in harms way to fight the nation’s wars.

yeah…war with Iran, and frozen aliens are kept in the pentagon. Obama? please, U.S. air defense has scored hit after hit, his “defense review board” is just an excuse to cut much needed programs from American defense. No war with Iran unless they start it. I am active duty. I wish you could sit in on the threat briefings. Iran is C-R-A-Z-Y. They’ll start it, they (the mullas) want it because their nation is crumbling.
Obama has no record. McCain at least knows the stakes. Stop with the “It’s all about oil” manta. Of course it is. Guess what is powering your computer? Guess what your computer is made out of….
The contractors are trying to flee Iraq because their immunity is going to expire. I have battle buddies coming back from Iraq. They support the fight. Yes they like being home (some switched jobs to take a break form deployments) but others are going back. Mass re-enlistment. We are building schools and hospitals (several soldiers from fort bliss have done just that). btw… Iran wants to KILL U.S. soldiers in Iraq. that was never oversold.

Actually, yes, the United States is covertly angling to start a war with Iran.
I do hope that your assertion that you’re active duty isn’t intended to end debate in some way, like Senator McCain thinks it should. You’re not dealing with someone that stupid.
Sorry.
I’m quite close to other people who are active duty, and they would agree with what I’m saying.
You misunderstand the Iranian regime, and you do so severely. The Iranian regime is crazy like a fox. It is no coincidence that they have ended up with a stronger hand both as a regime, and in Iraq. Make no mistake: the Iranian government has the ear of the Iraqi government in a way the United States NEVER will.
Oh, when we go to war with Iran, the US will make it look like Iran was the aggressor. If you believe them, you’re their fool. Just as it was several months ago when Iranian small boats supposedly committed “acts of war” against an American Naval ship, the Bush administration jumped right in to lie to the American people. Trouble is…it didn’t happen that way. Not even remotely. So yeah…the United States will make it look like Iran is the aggressor, and the media is so fucking lazy it might become accepted conventional wisdom, but just as with Iraq, the truth is in our faces before a single bomb has dropped, and progressives are sick and fucking tired of being proved right years later after bumbling warmongering retards have already had their chance to screw things up royally.
And of course, your battle buddies support the fight. Because you’re all in it. You have to be.
The responsibility we as citizens have is to make sure you’re not being sent into danger in conflicts that aren’t worth your sacrifice.
Oh, also? Iraq just told us to leave in no uncertain terms.
Your candidate, a military man who makes piss poor decisions as regards the military (and the veterans, my god, you all should be disgusted with him…the only veteran John McCain gives a fuck about is himself!), actually has shown that he not only doesn’t understand the stakes, but he also doesn’t value your life very much. He has shown repeatedly that he doesn’t even understand the geopolitics of the region.
Obama’s foreign policy advisors can run circles around McCain’s. They’re smarter, they’re younger (thank God, because the true definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, and these dumbasses have been doing the same fucking things for a half century), and they’re advising a candidate who has shown himself to be, above all things, anti-dumb, who listens to experts, who uses his brain, and who, my goodness, people actually like, unlike Bush, the president whom the world openly detests more than they’ll EVER detest two-bit Mahmoud, and whom leaders of allied nations smile at publicly and detest once the cameras go away. John McCain is hated by members of his own party in the Senate. I have zero trust that that hotheaded warmongering fuck could achieve anything diplomatically with Mexico, much less nations in a part of the world as volatile as the Middle East.
Oh, and btw, the contractors’ immunity SHOULD expire.
Iraq is supposedly a sovereign country, after all. Of course, your candidate seems to think we can ignore their requests for us to leave, so I guess all that “handing over sovereignty” thing was little more than a dog-and-pony show for the fucktards back home…

What service are you in Chockblock?
Iran is nuts, but WE’RE on the war-path. McCain is despicable as a ‘military’ man. On one hand he’s a vet with distinguished service and says he’s a good rep and director of the troops, but on the other hand, he CONSISTENTLY disproves this with his abyssmal voting record on vet/troop issues, and with his inability in making policy, CHANGING policy as needed, and directing a country at war. He has NO experience in these things, and has dumb advisers, and will not listen to the smart ones.
Obama is the opposite. Easy choice for this military man.
