Obama vs. McCain on Campaign Finance, and also my thoughts on this horrible FISA bill.

Please read John Cole’s entire post on this, because it’s so spot on. I’m already tired of hypocritical Republicans talking about Obama “breaking his promise” to take public money for the general election, yet paying no attention to the fact that campaign finance is supposedly McCain’s baby:

…[W]hat gets me is that McCain has completely gamed the system- his loan scheme with public financing then opting out is currently not even an issue on the show, and it would seem to me that would be at least mentioned. Of course, it is not, for whatever reason. Additionally, this is even more egregious when you consider that this is McCain’s signature issue. His name is on the damned bill, and the message he has sent is that the bill is a joke. Hell, aren’t there even lawsuits against the man on the issue?

(…)

…[T]he longer I am outside the Republican hive mind, the more I recognize that liberal media bias may be the biggest fraud the right-wing has ever gotten away with. It is absurd.

Yes, John, it is. I’m sorry, but the facts are simple: it’s been proven again and again and again, in many different ways, that the “liberal media” is completely mythical. If anything, the mainstream media leans a tad to the right, but, excepting Fox, the real networks do at least try to be fair. But Republicans understand one thing about their base: They’re not very smart. For whatever reason, they’re very easily lied to led, and they don’t hold their elected representatives accountable. This is why the “conventional wisdom” in this country is that the Republican party is pro-military, when any asshole can spend five minutes perusing Congressional records and find out that not only is the Democratic party FAR more supportive of our troops, but also that the Republican party is, indeed anti-military. Oh, they’re supportive of the military-industrial complex, sure…

That’s not the troops, dumbass.

UPDATE: Haha, it seems John Cole has said LOTS of completely argument-winning things about John McCain’s abject hypocrisy and Republicans’ remarkable stupidity re: campaign finance. Like this:

Someone please tell the Republicans and the McCain campaign to shut up about Obama opting out of public financing. Hypocrisy? Blow it out your ass- your candidate spent years forcing those laws down our and then just decided to break them and that they did not need to apply to him. Obama didn’t break any rules, or break any laws. Seriously. Just shut up and pound salt, you wankers.

Oh, and also? I haven’t said anything about this horrible FISA bill, because all I’ve seen is a bunch of libtards (yes, we have them, too) bitching and moaning about Obama’s role in this. Guess what? Fuck off, bloggers who want to complain about Obama. If you want to be angry, be angry at Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer, and all of the other idiot Democrats who voted for it. I completely support that. The very nature of the Democratic party is changing, and these capitulating, triangulating retards who claim “bipartisanship” when they lay down and die in front of moron Republican whims, need to hear the message that the voters are sick of it. (Oh, by the way, kudos to MY Congressman, Rep. Steve Cohen D-TN, who voted against the fucking thing.) Yes, it’s a horrible bill. No, it’s not a compromise, but rather, a capitulation. And yes, it’s absolutely fucking ludicrous to give Verizon and AT&T legal immunity for breaking the law at George’s behest, but this isn’t really Obama’s fault. First, he has to win the election, people. So, Glenn Greenwald, I love you and the work you do, but back up and try to see the big picture.

  1. Look, we have fought Bush over FISA for two years, and haven’t gotten anywhere. We have to have something in place before November. All Bush has to do is trot out some fabricated terrorist story and we lose everything.
    There’s a reason it’s called “politics”…

  2. Oh, I agree, but I just don’t think the hysterical reactions some bloggers have been having toward Obama is the right course of action.

  3. You’re right.
