Department of “No Shit”: New Bob Woodward book explains that the surge didn’t work
Except in the eyes of a few 500-year old retards who still think Richard Nixon was a good president (and their Reagan-fellating buttbabies), Bob Woodward is considered one of the finest journalists in the country, and in his new book The War Within: A Secret White House History, 2006-2008, he explains what actually contributed to the drop in violence in Iraq:
The book…says that the U.S. troop “surge” of 2007, in which President Bush sent nearly 30,000 additional U.S. combat forces and support troops to Iraq, was not the primary factor behind the steep drop in violence there during the past 16 months.
Rather, Woodward reports, “groundbreaking” new covert techniques enabled U.S. military and intelligence officials to locate, target and kill insurgent leaders and key individuals in extremist groups such as al-Qaeda in Iraq.
(snip)
Overall, Woodward writes, four factors combined to reduce the violence: the covert operations; the influx of troops; the decision by militant cleric Moqtada al-Sadr to rein in his powerful Mahdi Army; and the so-called Anbar Awakening, in which tens of thousands of Sunnis turned against al-Qaeda in Iraq and allied with U.S. forces.
(For cash.)
Four factors?! Why do four factors hate America and John McCain’s Walnut Cheeks?
I called this post the Department of “No Shit,” because progressives (and *cough* Barack Obama) have understood this for awhile now, and understood that the Anbar Awakening was already happening before Teh Surge started. Unfortunately, a large group of Americans are less taken in by facts than they are by uber-flatulent Republican branding.
Stupid dumbasses.

It’s funny how you will believe anything a liberal media person will say or write… Here’s a news flash for ya, the surge started well before the Anbar Awakening, trust me, I was there when it happened! It’s called convert operations, covert meaning that you won’t know about until you know about it. The surge did work and it is successful, so instead of you guys wanting your country to surrender, we just ignored your hate and fought for you at the same time, so you can question and ridicule every accomplishment we’ve achieved. So instead of tucking our tails between our legs, we will come back with victory in our hand. But thanks for your overwhelming support!
September 9, 2008 at 4:18 am
I’m glad you made it back safely.
Were you in a position to know the intimate details of the mission from the perspective of the nation as a whole?
Just curious, because “Teh Surge” actually didn’t start before the Anbar Awakening. It wasn’t even proposed until after the Anbar Awakening began. You may be talking about something different.
Now, that being said, shut the fuck up with the bullshit right-wing low-information voter crap about people “hating” you or wanting you to “surrender,” because let me tell you something, you fuckbag, THIS fucking liberal has family in the military, too, and THIS fucking liberal does everything he can to spread the word and hold our elected officials accountable for failing to provide YOUR MEN with body armor, for failing to provide YOU and your fellow soldiers adequate medical care when you come home, if you need it, and to generally hold the government accountable for failing to hold up their part of the bargain to only send YOU into danger if it’s absolutely necessary for the safety of our country, and let me tell you something, honey, if you actually study their voting records instead of listening to whatever douchebaggery Rush Limbaugh and other morons like him spew, if you actually study their records, you’ll find that it’s the Republicans who place NO VALUE on YOUR life. They do not support you or your brothers. They support the military-industrial complex and then they tell you all to stick it up your ass, but because the media is so goddamned stupid in this country, people are allowed to go on believing that the Republicans are something more than goddamned soulless fucking creeps.
So, you’ve got REAL support from THIS liberal, rather than the flatulently patriotic fucking bullshit that sticks a goddamned ribbon on the back of the car and goes back to watching American Idol.
Thank you for your service.
September 9, 2008 at 4:20 am
Oh, and if you think Bob Woodward is a liberal, it’s just more evidence that you’re buying into the right’s bullshit.
Newflash: the definition of “liberal” is not “anyone to the left of Rush Limbaugh,” because that would be pretty much everyone in the country besides a few maladjusted virginal creeps at RedState and Free Republic.
September 10, 2008 at 12:11 am
Dude you have like closet anger and a limited vocabulary! And actually I’m an Independent, not a republican, I voted on both sides, so nice try. I like to vote for Americans who will do the best for our country and my children.
My main concern is the security of our country and I just don’t believe Obama is the man for that job. McCain, he isn’t my first choice, nor second. but what can I do, I have to vote, so I will choose McCain, because I believe him will defend our country with no hesitation. And no, I am not a big O’Reilly fan.
I appreciate your family’s service, I just get so tired of people that have no idea what’s going on in Iraq spew there clueless opinions. But with that said we are doing good in Iraq and things are truly getting better… Donkey Lover!
September 10, 2008 at 12:15 am
Why do people cling to their “limited vocabulary” canard? Do they think they’re covering up the fact that they’re childishly offended by coarse language? Do they really truly still believe the lies their parents told them when they were children?
I fail to see how you could choose McCain over Obama, since McCain has been proven dangerously wrong over and over and over again, while Obama has been been proven prescient on foreign policy, over and over and over again.
I know you have to cut through the bullshit media noise to find the answers, but they’re there.
For about the third time, the Bush administration has adopted an Obama policy, having, of course, made fun of it in the press. However, once the Bush/McCain plan fails, they turn to what Obama’s been saying all along.
This election is really quite simple:
Obama – Judgment
McCain – Experience
Biden – Both
Palin – Neither
September 10, 2008 at 10:08 pm
I disagree, Palin does have some experience, granted she has only been a Governor for 2 yrs, but it is executive experience. Balancing budgets, Commander of the Alaskan National Guard, she’s had to deploy troops to natural disasters in Alaska and ready the troops logistical needs for deployments to Iraq. Plus she was a mayor, small town or not, she was a mayor and that’s executive experience. She is also was a city councilwoman. So there is a good argument that she has more experience than Obama. And she’s running for Veep.
I’m not sure about Obama’s judgment, it seems to me that he has switched on numerous issues during from primary to now. And I want him to just clear the air about all of these allegations against him and these radicals who he knows or associates with.
But the one that does it for me is that I just can’t see Obama as a Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, I just can’t get past that…
September 10, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Yeah, but look:
Two years of governing a state with fewer people than my city? No. Commander of the Alaska Nat’l Guard? She actually hasn’t deployed troops once. Not once! Also? Her record as mayor isn’t very good!
People like to discount this, but think about it, really think about it: The Obama campaign came out of nowhere to beat the CLINTON MACHINE. Talk about organization. Believe me, I’ve been a part of this campaign. Obama is the CEO of a political campaign that has literally changed the entire game. There haven’t been the staff shake-ups like there were in Clinton’s and there have been in McCain’s.
What issues do you feel like Obama has switched on? Seriously. Because McCain has abandoned almost every single principle he formerly had, from opposing torture to opposing tax cuts for the rich to the energy plan HE WROTE but now opposes…
As far as the “radicals,” dude, with the way the media obsessed over Jeremiah Wright, don’t you think that if there was ANYTHING there with the Ayers thing, that the media would be all over it? There’s nothing there beyond the fact that they live in the same town and both are politically involved. The board they served on together? Lots of other people were on that board, too, and most of them were Republicans!
Here’s my other question, as to the “commander in chief” thing: George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, two men who RAN FROM military service, have been running things for the past 8 years. The candidate who agrees with them across the board is John McCain. His service itself was honorable, but it in no way means he actually understands the military or has the judgment to deploy the military wisely. In fact, his record on this war suggests otherwise. Remember, John McCain was beating the drum to go to war against Iraq ONE MONTH after 9/11. He was right there with Donald Rumsfeld.
Obama, on the other hand — there’s a media narrative out there that somehow being “Commander in Chief” means that someone with military experience would automatically be better, but that’s crap, and you know it, when you think about it. That’s part of the point of the military having Civilian Leadership. And as I said, Obama’s judgment has been proven much more sound than McCain’s on matters of national security, and several times the Bush doctrine has been amended to reflect things that Obama has said. Of course Obama’s name is never attached to it, but if you compare Obama’s statements on Iran to what’s going on now, it’s like “Oh, lookie. The Bushies fucked around and fucked around and now they’re starting to come back toward where Obama was several years ago.”
I mean, think about it. I want a person with proven judgment up there. I don’t care about their specific experience. John McCain has shown that he doesn’t respect his fellow veterans very much, by the way he votes in the Senate. So I doubt he really respects you all in the military very much anymore. As my brother, who will undoubtedly follow up to what I’m going to say, because he’s online, will attest, he serves with a lot of people, and almost none are qualified to be president. It’s not a dig, it’s just reality.
September 10, 2008 at 10:24 pm
dude, evan’s totally right here. i’m active-duty. i’ve been there twice. and while i’ll give you the point that the situation in iraq isn’t nearly as bad (from a logistical standpoint) as the media implies, i truly don’t think john mccain will make any good decisions if given the opportunity. his brain is still in the 60’s…on every issue. obama was the one who suggested surgical strikes on known al-qaeda in pakistan (bush later used it with success). obama isn’t a fool. mccain however, still thinks we should be there…NEGATIVE. plus, mccain’s a documented hothead. we don’t need him being pissy with other leaders. if palin’s any indication of the caliber of personnel he’ll be surrounding himself with, then we’re in trouble.
September 10, 2008 at 10:42 pm
“he serves with a lot of people, and almost none are qualified to be president. It’s not a dig, it’s just reality.”
it’s true. really, really true.
“John McCain has shown that he doesn’t respect his fellow veterans very much, by the way he votes in the Senate. So I doubt he really respects you all in the military very much anymore.”
shit, it’s even documented that he didn’t have much respect while he was serving. he was one of…what was it called? the “bad bunch” or some such shit? yea…so he wasn’t even that fond of his brothers back then. now i know he was good as a POW, but he didn’t have anyone then…he NEEDED something. that’s really not an admirable quality – to say “fuck you” in fair weather and then flip as soon as you require something.
September 10, 2008 at 11:05 pm
oh, and those select few who i serve with who i would trust to run this country PROBABLY aren’t PC enough to put in front of people.
September 13, 2008 at 12:04 pm
Adam, quit lying over the internet. Anyone can be anyone they want over the internet.
Doesn’t take rocket science to figure out extra troops mean extra security. Same is true in a prison system.
Sounds like Evan just got completely dominated by facts. Poor little evan, maybe obama will give him a lollipop.
If Obama knew it didn’t work, then why did he admit it did? Wow…again, hypocrites/liars/clueless.
End of Discussion.
September 13, 2008 at 4:55 pm
Hahahahaha, you fucking moron, you’re taking it up with active duty?
Goddammit, you are a dumber piece of shit than I knew.
Hehe. Wow.
September 13, 2008 at 4:56 pm
“Dew Not Lah Over The Interwebs, sez the commenter who won’t even use his nayum!”
Stupid, stupid hick.
September 13, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Take it up with active duty? Lol, I’d bust his sorry face open if he were to stand in front of me. Supposedly serving his country, while spewing vomit like that. Sick of so much hypocrisy, don’t join the army to pay for college if you are going to cry about a war.
September 13, 2008 at 6:34 pm
Awesome, I just gave him your IP address.
September 13, 2008 at 6:37 pm
And now he has your e-mail.
September 13, 2008 at 6:44 pm
Also, you do realize that the troops have been giving to Obama by a 6-to-1 ratio.
I guess that means the troops are smarter than your weak baby ass by a 6-to-1 ratio.
September 13, 2008 at 6:52 pm
You see, people like you don’t like your troops smart. It makes it harder to treat them as expendable pawns. We on the left who treat the troops as human beings — well it’s not threatening to meet one who’s extremely intelligent AND brave.
You little sociopathic pussy.
September 13, 2008 at 11:53 pm
Well you got one more Active Duty who agrees with you and Adam.
It’s funny how your viewpoint changes when you actually bother to learn the facts and what is going on. Obama is the ONLY choice for us military guys and gals.
McCain is the end of us.
Joe
September 14, 2008 at 12:00 am
Oh…this about sums it up for me
September 14, 2008 at 1:36 am
Oh, don’t worry Joe, that scared closeted gay pussy won’t be coming back here b/c he knows that my brother has all of his personal information now. Do you want it too? He’s not far away from us at all…
September 14, 2008 at 10:23 pm
I could care less if you have my personal info. Little minds like you do not scare me. Quit signing on as active duty personnel, that is not fooling anybody.
And “Closeted” is not a word. Please go back to school. I know you lefties have lowered the standard, but please at least try….
September 14, 2008 at 10:24 pm
Yes, “closeted” is a word.
Also, my brother and Joe, two different branches of the military, know that you’re a weak pussy who’s too scared to use his real name on a blog.
September 15, 2008 at 7:45 am
Sounds like you guys are having fun… Evan, I’ll give you the point about Obama’s campaign, they are really organized and have raised a lot of money. Listen, we’re obviously going to disagree on who we think is best to lead our country, and like I said before McCain wasn’t even my third pick, but I will choose him over Obama come November.
Whether you agree with the war or not, we definitely needed more troops to help secure the hot zones, and McCain stuck his neck out for that and I respect that. since I was there at the time we needed help, in my eyes, McCain was key to getting us that help. So I can’t overlook that, and now the improvements in Iraq are better everyday.
As far as the Bush Doctrine, yes I say that if our intelligence says we are about to be attacked, then we hit first. Plain and simple for me. I do not want to wait for us to get hit and then react.
Adam, thanks for your service to our country. We may not agree on politics, but we are connected as veterans of this war forever…
On that note, Gen. David Petreaus needs a lot of credit and appreciation for our turnaround, he is a great leader, a hero and he will be deeply missed by the troops. Sad to see him go…
Bo
September 15, 2008 at 7:47 am
“As far as the Bush Doctrine, yes I say that if our intelligence says we are about to be attacked, then we hit first.”
But that’s not the Bush Doctrine. The Bush Doctrine is not about “preemptive” war, it’s about “preventive” war, which is different, and wholly unprecedented in American history.
September 15, 2008 at 7:50 am
Oh, and Bo, I should’ve been nicer to you, but dammit, some of the people who have been commenting here lately have made me a lit fuse. Just insanity.
And it really, really, really pisses me off when people like the other commenter say things like “Take it up with active duty? Lol, I’d bust his sorry face open if he were to stand in front of me. Supposedly serving his country, while spewing vomit like that. Sick of so much hypocrisy, don’t join the army to pay for college if you are going to cry about a war.”
That’s something that can only come out of the mouth of ignorant, ungrateful subhuman trash.
As someone who, like my brother and Joe, wears the uniform, you obviously understand that.
Anyway, like I said, you commented at the same time as that other moron, and I shoulda been nicer.
*shy grin*
Hope you have a good week.
September 15, 2008 at 11:09 am
I’ll say it again: Anyone who joins to pay for college, then spews liberal propoganda, needs his face busted, and I will do it. I don’t care who he is, or what he ’served’. To join the army, then whine and cry is total BS. If you can’t “Man Up”, then don’t join.
September 15, 2008 at 11:26 am
Okay, baby.
That’s it. You’ve violated the commenting policy quite a few times, so you’re done.
I will not have people impugning the honorable service of our military, or people who are obviously too stupid/immature to understand exactly what the freedoms are that said military fights for. You are very fortunate to live in country where freedom of speech is valued, but you are unfortunately not enough of a grown-up to respect your own freedoms.
I guess it’s time to find a new blog to obsessively check and recheck, as a means of some sort of fake human contact. Why don’t you join Second Life? I’ve heard it’s a great place to run away from your real life pain, loneliness, and bitterness.
Regardless, it’s been a joy.
September 15, 2008 at 2:45 pm
dude, PLEASE STOP talking about busting my face in…it’s scaring me.
but, on the realz, nothing i said in this particular thread was even close to “vomit” or “whining.” it was actually a moment of total control for me.
and WTF, we (even us soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen & coasties) ALL have a right to believe what we want about the war. and i have no problem deploying. in fact, i’ve volunteered for far more duty than is required of me. so again, please stop talking tough about busting ACTUAL patriots’ faces you detestable pussyfart.
oh, and new topic…since you accused both joe and i of not actually being AD, let’s play a fun trivia game. why don’t you ask us questions that only those who’ve been through basic and have been operational would know. that way, since you obviously know more than we do, you’ll be able to tell if we’re actually in the military or not. what’s that? you’ve never served so you wouldn’t know where to start? oh…
well, you can still ask anything you want and i’d be glad to “vomit” it back atcha until you bust me in the face for NOT being a liar.
September 15, 2008 at 9:32 pm
He wouldn’t be able to do so, because he’s not military, and he’s probably never taken the time to talk to a soldier/sailor/airman/marine beyond “So,’ve you killed anybody?”
September 15, 2008 at 10:32 pm
No problem Evan, I’m a big boy and I’ve been called worse. Your still a Donkey Lover though. LOL !!!
I’ll comment back here shortly, keep the fireworks going…. Bo
September 15, 2008 at 10:40 pm
I can be a donkey lover, that’s fine
The “fireworks” won’t be coming from that other guy anymore, though, he’s been banned.
September 16, 2008 at 1:07 am
bo, you’ve gained my respect – not just because you’re a fellow service member, but because although you disagree (which is perfectly fine in my world), you haven’t decided to go all WTF on us…which, for the sake of argument, would be a great reason for me to dislike evan…were he not telling the truth…plus my big brother.
September 16, 2008 at 1:08 am
Also?
Evan said “sorry.”
Moral of story: My blog! Mine! I make rules!
September 16, 2008 at 1:13 am
i’m just joshin nonni
(inside brother joke)
September 16, 2008 at 1:14 am
Stop it, you are going to make the other commenters Jeales.
Har har!
September 16, 2008 at 10:05 pm
i’m gonna make them shooey? i doubt that.
September 16, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Yes, you are.
The banned guy has now tried to leave almost thirty comments.
All different times of the day, too.
We should make him a list of hobbies or something.
