The American Public: Still ‘Tarded!

A new Harris Poll on Americans’ religious beliefs has come out, and, as expected, it’s a doozy. Let’s just start here:

Slender majorities of all adults believe that all or most of the Old Testament (55%) and the New Testament (54%) are the “Word of God.” However, only about a third of all adults (37% and 36%) believe that all of these texts are the word of God.

Interestingly, only 26% of all adults believe that the Torah is the word of God, even though it is the same as the first five books of the Old Testament. Presumably many people do not know this.

Oh…my…God.  We are surrounded by fucking buffoons.

I, of course, read this out to the people in the room with me, and the resident 12 year-old said, “um, the Torah is part of the Old Testament,” to which we replied, “thank you for being less retarded than the American public.”

Also, a majority of Americans (59%) believe in the Devil, while a minority (47%) “believe in” evolution.  (As a scientist friend of mine says, “Why do people refer to it as a belief?  It’s not a belief.  It just is.”

Slightly more encouraging is the fact that only 40% believe in Creationism (which is a belief, based on jackshit), but still…

Read the entire Retardo Manifesto for yourself.

One Response to “The American Public: Still ‘Tarded!”

  1. While there is a vast amount of evidence supporting the theory of evolution as fact (and, indeed, this is a commonly used scientific definition of fact – a theory with an overwhelming amount of supportive evidence) there will always be a certain percentage of the population who spout such tidbits of wisdom as “It’s a theory, and that means it isn’t proven” and “If man evolved from monkeys and apes…” et cetera.

I assumed that the numbers would be high, but this is staggering. Our ignorance as a country is matched only by our steadfast determination to resist any intrusion on our comfortably decrepit and useless beliefs.

31% for astrology? Are we truly that dense?
